Places 2 be…
The quirky Wandsbek is both a residential district and a business location. Wandsbeks central location in the metropolis Hamburg is not the only reason for the attractiveness of the district. You’ll also find idyllic and natural corners.
Wandsbeker marketplace
The redesigned Wandsbek market place is the new heart of the district, which is well received by the people of Wandsbek. As are the many parks and green spaces that run through the district like the river Wandse. Close to the market square is the beautiful Puvogelbrunnen, dedicated to the former Wandsbek mayor Friedrich Puvogel. Puvogel was also editor of the daily newspaper “Der Wandsbecker Bothe”.
Wandsbeker Quarree
The Wandsbeker Quarree is the central place for shopping in Wandsbek and is located at the Wandsbeker Markt. Built in 1988 and extensively renovated in 2011the centre provides a broad range of products ranging from classic consumer goods to luxury items. The site includes a large multiplex cinema giving an almost small town feeling.
Mühlenteich Park
The Mühlenteich lies along the course of the river Wandse and was redesigned in 2011. Since then, the park has revitalized the surrounding district, the so-called “Brauhausviertel”, which is returning to its former glory as a lively urban quarter with a colourful mix of residential, commercial and green spaces. The park is part of a green belt, which also includes the Eichtalpark and the Wandsbek Botanical Special Garden.
Kulturschloss Wandsbek
In the vicinity of the “Mühlenteich” is also the “Kulturschloss Wandsbek”, a venue for music, theatre or readings. Still relatively new, opening in 2010 it provides local ‘Wandsbekers’ with music, exhibitions, readings, theatrical productions and much more. The “Kulturschloss Wandsbek” also organizes the annual summer festival in Wandsbek around the Mühlenteich.
Botanischer Sondergarten
Walking further along the small river “Wandse”, you will come to the colourful botanical garden with its 1,000 species of plants. The 1.5-hectare park regularly hosts garden exhibitions and guided tours on natural topics.
The largest Oktoberfest in Hamburg
Once a year, the Wandsbek market place becomes the site of the Wandsbek Wiesn, and Hamburg’s largest Oktoberfest. The event is popular with locals who celebrate Bavarian style with pork knuckles, Bretzels, veal sausage and of course beer in a tent which gets erected in September.
State Archives of Hamburg
The headquarters of the Hamburg State Archive has been located in Wandsbek since 1997. The state-of-the-art administration building with clever passive air conditioning, dispenses with expensive and environmentally unfriendly technical equipment, ensures optimal conditions for the permanent storage of archive material.
Numerous sporting activities
Wandsbek has plenty to offer sportsmen and women: In addition to Cabrio Sport, where you can play tennis, badminton, squash and table tennis, there are also bowling and fitness centres where bowling and fitness enthusiasts can have their fun. So there is something for everyone.
